FDM & FFF 3D Printer: devices for advanced users

Another name for this FDM print is Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). It was introduced by the RepRap project to allow a trademark free use because the term "Fused Deposition Modeling" (FDM) is a protected trademark of the company Stratasys. The FDM process was invented by S. Scott Crump in the late 1980s. Thermoplastics and molding waxes such as polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS, polylactide, PETG and so-called thermoplastic elastomers can be used for the FDM process. The filaments are filled up with metal powders in a more recent process. The printed object is sintered to obtain a structure that is purely metallic.

Comparable to a normal printer, in the melt-layer process, a grid of dots is first applied to a certain area. The points are produced by:

  • the liquidization of a wire-shaped wax or plastic material by heating
  • application by extrusion through a special nozzle
  • a subsequent hardening or cooling at the intended location in a grid of the work surface
