HIPS filament for 3D printers in the 3D PRIMA online shop
Buy cheap filaments made of HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
HIPS is a very special yet much sought after filament for 3D printing. HIPS stands for High Impact Polystyrene and is a rubber modified and high impact polystyrene. It is a transparent, partially crystalline, foamed white or amorphous thermoplastic. The thermoplastic HIPS is often used in housings (e.g. on a PC), TV sets or telephone systemes. Inside refrigerators and freezers, the first, extremely cold-resistant coating is very often made of HIPS. Even for plastic toys, HIPS is used. Furthermore, High Impact Polystyrene is also used as a washable carrier material in 3D printers.

3D printer material: HIPS filament offers many unique advantages
For the successful 3D printing of products with so-called "overhanging" structures, users need a supporting material in special cases, which fills the empty spaces in the object via an extra extruder. For example, water-soluble products, which can be washed out after the 3D printing process. Limonene, for example, is suitable for this purpose.
The filament HIPS has a density of about 1.04-1.08 g / cm3. Depending on the type, in the polystyrene matrix, High Impact Polystyrene has four to twelve mass percent of a polybutadiene rubber. From time to time manufacturers add flame retardants like DecaBDE or HBCD to the matrix. This should reduce the flammability and ignitability. The filament HIPS melts at 235 degrees. The softening temperature is 95 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability remains guaranteed up to 85 degrees. The elongation at break is between eight and ten percent. Filament High Impact Polystyrene is basically similar to ABS. In addition, however, comes a high impact resistance.
High Impact Polystyrene: short: HIPS
HIPS is similarly used or processed as the filament ABS. If you want to use HIPS as support material, you should prefer two-color printing. Particular attention should be paid to warping. Another small safety note: If you use HIPS as support material and work with Limonene, then you should beware of chemicals. It is not very dangerous, but it can cause irritation. Therefore, limonene or its vapors should not come into contact with eyes or similar.
